Doug Curry is the principal of San Jacinto Elementary in Amarillo, Texas. San Jacinto became the first No Excuses University in the state of Texas at the beginning of the 2007-2008 school year. San Jacinto had notoriously been one of the lowest performing schools in the city of Amarillo. However, this past school year, San Jacinto received "Exemplary" status for improved student performance.
Doug has a total of 30 years in education, with a wide variety of experiences. He taught 4th grade for 18 years, served as a curriculum coordinator for 2 years, served as the principal of a KG-4 school for 2 more, became a principal for alternative education students, including being the principal of a juvenile detention center, and has served as either an assistant or a principal for 7 years in Amarillo.
Every experience that Doug has had in his career has been in working with students who are at-risk. He has presented staff development sessions numerous times for school districts in Texas and nationally, particularly in the area of Math instruction. With the improvements that are now occurring at San Jacinto, Doug has now become a presenter at local, state, and national educational conferences about college readiness for all students. At the end of this current school year, he will have completed 4 years as principal of San Jacinto, a school consisting of 700 Pre-K through 5th grade students, of which over 95% are considered low socioeconomic. His belief about San Jacinto is, "When you combine outstanding teachers such as those that work at San Jacinto with the inspirational beliefs of the TurnAround Institute and No Excuses University, lives are changed on a daily basis. Ours is a school of real hope for a better future for our children."
